The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian by Andy Weir was a fun and interesting read.  The main character, Mark Watney, made the novel seem hugely realistic and human.  His humor literally had me laughing out loud numerous times, and that is something that's very rare for me when reading.  I think the reason for this is because he was very sarcastic, and also fairly honest.  Although he was stuck on Mars and was headed toward an almost certain death, he never made you feel sorry for him.
The comedic tone of the book was incredibly prominent, and was a great compliment to the sci fi genre of the story.  I think it's important to note that I'm really not a fan of science fiction stories.  This one, however, may have made its way into my ever-growing list of favorite books.  I unexpectedly fell in love with the sarcastic humor, and I found it so easy for feel empathy for Mark, his crew, and even the people at NASA.   I think that my usual dislike for sci fi stems from it seeming hard for me to relate to, but this story focused a lot more on the characters than the science behind the technology and situation.  While there were explanations of the science behind space travel and technological aspects, the characters and their personalities really dominated the story and made for a fantastic read.
